Short answer: The main sacred sites of Panchavati and the old city lie close together, so you can see them in one unhurried day. A simple plan is: early bath or darshan at Ramkund, then Kapaleshwar Mahadev, the Kalaram Temple and Sita Gufa through the morning, a rest and lunch, and then Sundarnarayan and, if you have the energy, Tapovan in the afternoon. Start early, keep the day flexible and avoid the main bathing days.
Early Morning: Ramkund
Begin at Ramkund on the Godavari, the main bathing ghat of Nashik. It is calm and cool in the early hours, and the crowd builds later. Take your bath or offer prayers only in the marked areas. Our monsoon guide explains why you should skip the water when the river is high.
Morning: Kapaleshwar, Kalaram and Sita Gufa
- Kapaleshwar Mahadev Temple: a Shiva temple by the Godavari, known for having no Nandi bull according to local tradition.
- Kalaram Temple: the famous black-stone temple of Lord Ram, with its link to the Ramayana and to the 1930 entry movement led by Dr. Ambedkar.
- Sita Gufa: the narrow cave shrine beside the sacred banyan grove. The entrance is tight and has steps, so go with patience.
These places are within walking distance of one another in the Panchavati area. Ask a local or a volunteer for the easiest walking order, because lanes can be one-way or closed on busy days.
Midday: Rest and Eat
Take a break in the afternoon heat or rain. Our Nashik food guide suggests simple vegetarian options such as misal pav, poha and sabudana khichdi.
Afternoon: Sundarnarayan and Tapovan
- Sundarnarayan Temple: the old black-stone Vishnu temple in the old city by the river.
- Tapovan: the calm riverside area with the Laxman temple and the Kapila Sangam. It is a short ride from Panchavati, so go by auto or taxi.
Planning Tips
- Pick an ordinary day, not a main bathing day. The busiest days are 2 August, 31 August, 11 September and 12 September 2027, when roads and ghats may be closed. See the schedule.
- Check each temple's current timings before you go, because they change on festival days.
- Wear comfortable footwear, carry water and a raincoat, and keep your bag light. See our packing list.
- Do not worry if you cannot see everything. Even Ramkund, Kapaleshwar and Kalaram on their own make a full and satisfying morning.
